Steel Market Update August 2025

The steel market continues to test the patience of fabricators, OEMs, and supply chain leaders. At Steel Warehouse, we believe clarity is critical in uncertain times. Here’s what we’re seeing — and what it means for your business as we move into the back half of 2025.

Steel Prices – Testing the Bottom

Market sentiment suggests steel prices are nearing their floor. Buyers are increasingly asking for requotes, hoping to capture final discounts before prices stabilize. For many, this is a signal that the long slide is ending.

What it means for fabricators and OEMs: If you’ve delayed orders, the window to buy at or near the bottom may be closing. Prices could firm if restocking activity accelerates.

Tariffs, Trade Policy & Onshoring

Recent shifts in U.S. trade policy have reinforced requirements for steel “melted and made” domestically. While this strengthens domestic supply chains, it also increases reliance on U.S. mills and introduces inflationary pressure.

Update: New steel derivatives were recently added to U.S. tariffs, limiting lower-cost import options.

Takeaway: Procurement teams should prepare for higher baseline costs and fewer low-cost import alternatives. In this environment, strategic supplier partnerships will matter more than ever. Steel is just the start of our story — at Steel Warehouse, we help you navigate volatility with inventory strategies, mill relationships, and processing capabilities that keep your operations moving.

Global Production Trends

Oversupply remains a defining feature of the global market. China, after curbing output earlier this year, is now increasing production again — betting on demand recovery. India and North America have maintained steady production.

Implication: Even with global overcapacity, tariffs and logistics barriers mean U.S. buyers won’t see much direct relief. The domestic market remains insulated, and pricing is more dependent on U.S. mill behavior than overseas supply.

Availability & Lead Times

  • Current: Hot roll lead times remain in the 4–6 week range.
  • Q4 Outlook: Planned mill maintenance outages, typically 3–10 days each, could overlap and reduce supply. Availability may tighten temporarily, particularly if demand improves at the same time.

Demand Drivers

  • Steady: Solar and oil & gas continue to consume large volumes of steel.
  • Growing: Agricultural and heavy equipment markets are driving more orders as fabrication is reshored to North America.
  • Material Trends: High-strength low-alloy steels such as Grade 100 HSLA are seeing broader adoption for lightweighting, payload efficiency, and performance

Risks in Focus

The biggest concern for supply chain leaders is the inflationary impact of tariffs and trade policies. Costs are climbing across the chain — from mills, to processors, to end users. In niche categories, where domestic alternatives are limited, policy risks are especially pronounced.

Opportunities Ahead

  • Forecasting Accuracy: The more precise and timely your forecasts, the better positioned you are to secure material at the right price.
  • Smarter Sourcing: Evaluate whether parts are over-engineered. In some cases, switching to higher-strength steels allows for thinner gauges and reduced weight without sacrificing performance.
  • Inventory Strategy: Just-in-Time (JIT) doesn’t mean “last minute.” When supported by forecasting, it’s a proven way to control cost and free up working capital.

Looking Toward Q4 2025 and Beyond

Expect trade policy and mill behavior to drive volatility well into next year. Certain specialized imports will take time to replicate in the U.S., meaning supply alternatives won’t appear overnight. Planning ahead remains the surest hedge.
