ASTM A283 Plates
ASTM A283 outlines two grades, Grade C and Grade D, of carbon steel plates. Grades C and D have slightly different tensile requirements and carbon content limits. Grade C has a 55 ksi yield strength minimum and a 0.24% maximum carbon limit. Grade D has a 60 ksi yield strength minimum and a 0.27% maximum carbon limit.

Weldability
Increased carbon content is associated with increased hardenability, leading to the risk of cracking after welding. In this specification, grade C has a 0.24% maximum carbon limit, while grade D has a 0.27% maximum carbon limit. This limit is higher than some popular HSLA specifications such as ASTM A572 or ASTM A656.

Ease of Fabrication
High carbon limits may make fabrication more difficult.
Defined Sizes
ASTM A283 does not have thickness limits for its specified structural products.
Thermal Cutting
Laser and plasma cutting is similar to weldability in terms of the heated cut edge hardening and cracking.
Bendability
ASTM A283 refers to ASTM A6 for bending guarantees.
