ASTM A109 is a specification that covers cold-rolled carbon steel strip, in cut lengths or coils, with a maximum carbon content of 0.25%. The specification applies to steel strip produced by cold reduction of hot-rolled strip and includes seven tempers, ranging from dead soft to full hard. This specification is commonly used for applications requiring controlled thickness, superior surface finish, and specific mechanical properties.

- ASTM A109 material is available as cold-rolled strip in coils or cut lengths.
- Available thickness ranges from 0.005” to 0.134” (0.13 mm to 3.40 mm)
- Available width ranges up to 23.5” (597 mm)
Ease of Fabrication
ASTM A109 cold-rolled strip is designed for precision fabrication. It can be blanked, stamped, drawn, or roll-formed with excellent dimensional control.
Weldability
- Due to its low carbon content, ASTM A109 strip steel offers excellent weldability in all grades.
- Thermal Cutting
- ASTM A109 material is typically sheared or slit rather than thermally cut. If thermal cutting (laser or plasma) is required, care must be taken to avoid localized hardening at the edges.

Bendability
Bendability in ASTM A109 depends heavily on temper.
- Tempers 1–3 (Dead Soft to Quarter Hard) provide excellent bend performance for forming and drawing.
- Tempers 4–7 (Half Hard to Full Hard) require larger bend radii and may exhibit reduced ductility.
