Ease of Fabrication
ASTM A516 can be readily formed, welded, and machined. The material’s balanced strength, ductility, and toughness make it suitable for pressure vessel fabrication, structural components, and general engineering applications.
Weldability
ASTM A516 steels have good weldability due to controlled carbon and manganese levels. The carbon equivalent value (CEV) is typically low enough to support welding without preheating for thinner sections.
Thermal Cutting
Thermal cutting processes are acceptable for ASTM A516 plates. As with other carbon-manganese steels, controlling heat input and allowing slow cooling minimizes hardening at the cut edge.
Bendability
Bend performance is governed by ASTM A20/A20M.

Notes from the Technical Group
- ASTM A516 is frequently used in the fabrication of pressure vessels, boilers, and heat exchangers where improved notch toughness is essential. It is often dual-certified to ASME SA516.
