Weldability
The high carbon content of 1070 increases hardenability and wear resistance but makes the material difficult to weld without special precautions. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are required to minimize cracking and distortion.
Ease of Fabrication
Machining and forming operations are best performed in the annealed state, as hardness increases significantly after heat treatment.
Thermal Cutting
1070 can form brittle edges when laser or plasma cut without proper preheating. The elevated carbon level promotes edge hardening in the heat-affected zone.
Bendability
SAE 1070 offers limited bendability due to its high hardness potential. Bending should be performed only in the annealed or normalized condition, as hardened material is prone to cracking.
Hardness
In the hardened condition, 1070 can reach Rockwell hardness values between 55–60 HRC, depending on section size and tempering temperature.
