ASTM A871
ASTM A871 is a specification for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel plates intended for atmospheric corrosion resistance and improved mechanical properties. This steel grade is primarily used in welded bridges and other structures where resistance to weathering and corrosion is essential.

ASTM A871 Characteristics
Property
specification
Weldability
ASTM A871 has good weldability using conventional methods. The maximum carbon content and controlled alloy additions maintain a favorable carbon equivalent (CEV) for welding without excessive hardening.
Thermal Cutting
Laser and plasma cutting can be performed effectively with ASTM A871, though care should be taken to prevent excessive heat input which may affect corrosion resistance near the cut edge.
Bendability
ASTM A871 conforms to ASTM A6/A6M bending requirements. The material demonstrates good ductility for its strength class, allowing cold bending with proper radii.
Ease of Fabrication
Both Type I and Type II A871 steels contain copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus, providing enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion similar to weathering steels such as ASTM A588.

Notes from the Technical Group
- ASTM A871 provides strength and corrosion resistance comparable to ASTM A588, but is specifically intended for plate products. It can serve as an alternative to galvanized or painted steels in structural environments where a naturally weathered appearance is desired.
