A1008 Steel Sheet & Strip

ASTM A1008 is a cold-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip specification that covers a broad range of grades designed for forming, drawing, and structural applications. This specification applies only to cold-rolled coils, cut lengths, and sheets. It is one of the most widely used cold-rolled sheet specifications in North America.

Ease of Fabrication

ASTM A1008 covers a wide range of cold-rolled grades, providing options for both forming and high-strength applications. Lower-strength grades are ideal for stamping and drawing, while HSLAS and UHSS steels offer higher yield strength for structural and automotive components.

Weldability

Since cold-rolled steels under ASTM A1008 are generally low in carbon, most grades exhibit excellent weldability. HSLAS and UHSS grades require greater attention to preheat and filler selection to maintain joint integrity.

Thermal Cutting

1008 steels are less commonly cut thermally, as they are typically used in thinner gauges. When required, cutting methods such as laser or plasma are acceptable.

Bendability

Grades covered by ASTM A1008 exhibit excellent bend performance. Formable grades (CS, DS, DDS, EDDS) can achieve tight bend radii without cracking. Structural and high-strength grades should follow minimum bend radius recommendations as specified in ASTM A6.
