ASTM A517
ASTM A517 is a specification for high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plates intended for use in pressure vessels and welded structures operating at elevated pressures and moderate temperatures. It is engineered for exceptional strength, toughness, and resistance to brittle fracture, making them ideal for applications involving high stress and pressure.

Weldability
A517 steels offer good weldability when proper welding procedures are followed. Due to the higher alloy and carbon content, preheating and post-weld heat treatment are recommended to prevent cracking and maintain toughness.
Thermal Cutting
Thermal cutting (oxy-fuel, laser, or plasma) is acceptable for A517 plates.
Bendability
Because ASTM A517 is supplied in the quenched and tempered condition, bendability depends on plate thickness and grade. Thinner sections exhibit reasonable formability, but overall, A517 is less ductile than lower-strength carbon steels such as A516 or A515.
Ease of Fabrication
Fabrication of A517 requires attention to detail due to its high strength and hardness. It can be machined, welded, and formed with proper preheat and post-heat controls.
