HSLA Steel (High Strength Low Allow)

High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel is very strong, highly formable, and easy to weld.

High Strength Low Alloys are made to provide specific mechanical properties rather than specific chemical compositions. They are used in cars, trucks, cranes, bridges, and other structures where their high strength-to-weight ratio is most cost-effective.

Strength

The common naming protocol in North America is to use the minimum strength level to designate the grade, ranging from 35-100 KSI, or 240-690 MPa. For example, grade 50 has a minimum yield strength of 50 KSI.

Formability

The low carbon content facilitated by the small additions of micro alloying elements results in excellent forming characteristics relative to the elevated strength levels.

Chemistry

HSLA steels use small additions of micro alloying elements, Nb, V, and Ti, to strengthen the material without elevating the carbon content.

Cost

Converting a part from a mild carbon steel to HSLA Grade 100 can reduce the part cost by 25%.

Grades

For flat rolled steels, the popular HSLA grades are 50, 80, and 100. While there may be significant volumes in other grades, consider consulting your material supplier to confirm availability.

What is HSLA Steel Recommended For?

Use HSLA steels in cars, trucks, cranes, bridges, and other structures where their high strength-to-weight ratio is most cost-effective.

HSLA steels are available in a series of grades, designated by their tensile strength. As shown in this graph, there is a trade-off between Strength and Formability.

HSLA – F grades are available with about 10% higher Formability at each Strength.

We will be glad to help you select the exact grade for your needs.
