ASTM A515
ASTM A515 is a specification that covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded pressure vessels. This specification provides several grades defined by tensile strength levels. ASTM A515 steels are designed for service at elevated temperatures and are not intended for low-temperature applications, where notch toughness is a concern.

Weldability
ASTM A515 steels have moderate weldability due to their higher carbon content compared to A516. The steel’s chemistry allows it to develop good strength at elevated temperatures, but slightly reduces low-temperature ductility compared to A516.
Thermal Cutting
Plates may be cut using oxy-fuel, plasma, or laser methods. As with other pressure vessel steels, controlling heat input and allowing gradual cooling minimizes the risk of hardening or cracking at the edges.
Bendability
A515 steel can be bent to standard minimum radii as defined in ASTM A20/A20M. The higher carbon levels and strength grades (especially Grades 65 and 70) require slightly larger bend radii than lower-strength grades such as 55 or 60.
Ease of Fabrication
It is well suited for forming and welding into cylindrical or spherical vessel shells, heads, and components subjected to high heat and internal pressure. For superior toughness or lower temperature performance, ASTM A516 is generally preferred.
