SAE J403

SAE J403 is a specification developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) that defines requirements for standard SAE carbon steel grades. Unlike specifications that establish mechanical properties for a finished steel product, SAE J403 primarily classifies these steels by chemistry. SAE J403 grades can be produced in various product forms, with applicable chemistry requirements and tolerances depending on the material and manufacturing requirements.

Weldability

SAE J403 steels exhibit excellent weldability in the lower carbon grades (≤ 0.25% C). As carbon content increases, weldability decreases due to increased hardenability.

Thermal Cutting

Thermal cutting can be performed, though heat input should be controlled for high-carbon grades to avoid hardened edges.

Bendability

Formability generally decreases as carbon content and material strength increase. Lower carbon steels tend to be easier to bend and form, while higher-carbon grades may require greater consideration.

Ease of Fabrication

SAE J403 steels are versatile and widely machinable.
