SAE 4142 is furnished to defined chemical composition ranges and mechanical property requirements. In general form, the alloy includes approximately 0.40-0.45% carbon, 0.75-1.00% manganese, 0.80-1.10% chromium, and 0.15-0.25% molybdenum, with silicon typically around 0.15-0.35% and phosphorus/sulfur maintained at low levels.
