ASTM A529 Shapes, Plates, and Bars
ASTM A529 is a specification for carbon-manganese structural steel. The two available grades are Grade 50 and Grade 55. ASTM A529 steel is intended for buildings and other general structures.
For a similar structural steel with lower strength levels, see ASTM A36.

ASTM A529 Characteristics
Increased carbon content is associated with increased hardenability, leading to the risk of cracking after welding. ASTM A529 has a maximum carbon limit of 0.27%, which is relatively high.
Steel Warehouse can limit carbon contents to improve thermal cutting, formability, and welding performance.
Welding, thermal cutting, and basic forming may be more difficult than with a standard HSLA Grade 50 or a structural steel of lower strength levels due to rich alloy contents.
ASTM A786 has a maximum material thickness of one inch.
Laser and plasma cutting is similar to weldability in terms of the heated cut edge hardening and cracking.
ASTM A529 refers to ASTM A6 for bending guarantees.
