ASTM A514 Steel Plates
ASTM A514 is a specification for quenched and tempered alloy steel plates. Heat treatment requirements disqualify as-rolled steel coils, so ASTM A514 is usually furnished with discrete plates. This specification outlines eight grades with various chemical composition requirements. Along with strength minimums, A514 also requires a Brinell hardness range for plates less than ¾” thick.

ASTM A514 Characteristics
Increased carbon content is associated with increased hardenability, leading to the risk of cracking after welding. ASTM A514 steel has a rich chemistry to respond to heat treating and quenching, making it more susceptible to cracking.
Steel Warehouse can limit carbon contents to improve thermal cutting, formability, and welding performance.
Welding, thermal cutting, and basic forming may require special precautions. ASTM A514 steel is on the more difficult end of the fabrication spectrum.
ASTM A514 defines plates up to six inches thick.
Laser and plasma cutting is similar to weldability in terms of the heated cut edge hardening and cracking.
ASTM A514 refers to ASTM A6 for bending guarantees.
