ASTM A242 Shapes, Plates, and Bars
ASTM A242 is a specification for structural steel with atmospheric corrosion resistance. It defines one type, Type 1, and one yield strength for thicknesses under ¾” thick.
Available Designations
- Structural Steel: furnished to a chemical composition and defined mechanical properties.
Listed Designations
Structural SteelA
- Grade 50
A Yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation guaranteed in the transverse direction
ASTM A242 Characteristics
Increased carbon content is associated with increased hardenability, leading to the risk of cracking after welding. ASTM A242 has a maximum carbon limit of 0.15%, which is mitigates the risk of cracking.
Steel Warehouse can limit carbon contents to improve thermal cutting, formability, and welding performance.
Welding, thermal cutting, and basic forming may be completed more easily using ASTM A242 steel than with similar weathering steels such as ASTM A588 or ASTM A606 due to lower carbon limits.
ASTM A242 defines plates up to four inches thick.
Laser and plasma cutting is similar to weldability in terms of the heated cut edge hardening and cracking.
ASTM A242 refers to ASTM A6 for bending guarantees.
